Mounth Guards
middleton, manchester
A mouth guard is a removable device made from a plastic based material that is designed to cover your teeth and gums. Bite and mouth guards are used for a variety of reasons within dentistry.
One of the most common reasons for making a mouth guard is for the prevention of any injury to teeth during contact based sports such as boxing, karate or rugby football. This is particularly important in younger children with a developing dentition. It is vitally important to protect young newly erupted teeth particularly in the anterior region of the mouth from any form of trauma which may cause damage to them and lead to the need for advanced and more complex treatment in later life. During teenage years where sport is played at school the mouth may be changing shape on a regular basis with teeth moving around as they develop and move into their more finally established positions.
It is therefore vitally important to get a good custom-made mouth guard from your dentist rather than just buying a simple prefabricated one that is made and moulded using kettle boiling water.
Here at Langley Dental Practice we will advise about the construction and need for mouth guards after a detailed dental examination is done and as part of an overall treatment plan.
