NHS Dental Charges

NHS Dental Charges

Dentistry is one of the few NHS services where you have to pay a contribution towards the cost of your care. These charges are not kept by the dental practice – instead they go straight to the government as a form of taxation on your teeth.

The information below explains what you may have to pay for your NHS dental treatment.

Emergency dental treatment – £27.40

Covers emergency care in a primary care NHS dental practice, such as pain relief or a temporary filling.

Band 1 course of treatment – £27.90

Includes examination, diagnosis (e.g. X-rays), advice on preventing future problems, a scale and polish if needed, and application of fluoride varnish.

If you require urgent care, even if it takes more than one appointment, you will only need to pay one Band 1 charge.

Band 2 course of treatment – £76.60

Includes everything in Band 1, plus additional treatment such as fillings, root canal work, or tooth extractions.

Band 3 course of treatment – £332.10

Includes everything in Bands 1 and 2, plus more complex procedures such as crowns, dentures, and bridges.
